Transfers from an existing IRA, HSA, or Coverdell ESA

(trustee-to-trustee)

Account holders can transfer cash and/or assets from an existing IRA, HSA, or Coverdell ESA into their self-directed account at Directed IRA by initiating a trustee-to-trustee transfer. To complete a cash or in-kind transfer, follow these steps:

Log in and fill out a Transfer Request Form. Once submitted, our funding team will remit the transfer form to your transferring custodian along with a letter of acceptance (if required) within 3 business days. Directed IRA will work directly with your current custodian to complete the transfer, maintain tax-advantaged status, and avoid penalties.

Once processed, transferring custodians will typically transfer your cash within 7 business days. In-kind transfers (assets) may take up to 3 weeks and are provided to Directed IRA via an “Assignment” of the asset. Account holders must forward copies of their Investment Documents to [email protected]. These documents vary per investment type and are listed here.

Once we receive all your investment documents, we will review them, and if acceptable, book your assets into your account within 3 business days.

Rollovers from a 401(k) or other Employer Plan

Account holders can transfer cash and/or assets from an employer 401(k), S 401(k), or other employer plan into their self-directed account at Directed IRA using one of the following rollover methods:

401(k) or Other Employer Plan Rollover

For those with a previous employer-sponsored plan, such as a 401(k), Roth 401(k), 403(b), TSP, 457, Profit Sharing, or Defined Benefit.

1. Fill out a 401(k) Rollover Form (recent financial statement required).

2. Once submitted, contact your plan’s administrator and request a Rollover.

3. Once received, the check will clear within 7 business days and funds will be transferred into your account.

60-Day Rollover

For those wanting to take receipt of funds distributed from an IRA or eligible non-IRA plan and deposit them into an IRA without triggering a taxable event (must be done within 60 days). If the funds are returned to an IRA after 60 days, the rollover is considered a reportable distribution and is subject to taxes and if you are under the age of 59, penalties.

1. Fill out a 60-Day Rollover Form.

2. Once submitted, forward your check (if applicable) to Directed IRA at 3033 N. Central Ave, Suite 400 Phoenix, AZ 85012.

3. Once received, all checks and bank transfers (ACH) should fully clear into your Directed IRA account within 7 business days upon receipt of funds. Wires are available same day.

Requirement: Current IRS rules only allow one rollover between IRAs per person per 12-month rolling period. Please familiarize yourself with the IRS’s “One-Rollover-Per-Year Rule”.

Requirement: This form does not apply when you receive a check from a former employer plan that is made payable to your new custodian. If this is the case, please follow the 401(k) or Other Employer Plan Rollover steps.

Solo 401(k) Transfer

For those with an existing Solo 401(k) who want to transfer cash and/or assets from their old custodian to their new Solo 401(k) at Directed IRA.

1. Fill out a Solo 401(k) Form.

2. Once received, your transfer will be processed within 2-3 business days.

Solo 401(k) Rollover

For those with a retirement plan (such as a 401(k), Roth 401(k), 403(b), TSP, 457, Profit Sharing, Defined Benefit, etc.) sponsored by a former employer, or a Traditional IRA, SEP IRA, or SIMPLE IRA that they want to rollover into their new Solo 401(k) account at Directed IRA.

1. Fill out a Solo 401(k) Form.

2. For rollovers from a retirement plan sponsored by a former employer, contact your plan’s administrator to request a Rollover.

3. Once received, your transfer will be processed within 3 business days.

Upon receipt of your funding request, Directed IRA will review and initiate a transfer from your existing IRA within 3 business days. Transferring assets other than cash may require additional time and documentation. If you wish to expedite the submission of your transfer request, please indicate on the form.
For Transfers from an existing IRA, HSA, or Coverdell ESA (trustee-to-trustee), the funding process usually takes 5-10 business days. However, the exact timeline may vary depending on your current custodian or administrator.

For Direct Rollovers from a 401(k) or Other Employer Plan, the funding process usually takes 2-4 weeks. This process takes longer since most employer plans send physical checks. We recommend you contact your current financial institution to ensure they are processing your transfer or rollover request to Directed IRA.
Once funds are received, how soon will I see them in my account as available funds? Directed IRA’s clearing periods are as follows for Rollover Checks:
• All checks and bank transfers (ACH) within 7 business days upon receipt of funds
• Wires are available same day

Contribution limits for accounts at Directed IRA depend on the type of self-directed account you have (Traditional, Roth, HSA, ESA, etc.) as well as factors like your income and tax filing status. The IRS sets these limits, which can change periodically, so it’s important to stay informed about the latest guidelines. Make a contribution.

For all Direct Rollovers, account holders will need to provide a copy of their most recent statement from their current financial institution. You can submit bank statements using one of these methods:
